Pakistan’s T20I Leadership Shakeup: Basit Ali Exposes PCB’s Secret Plan
March 6, 2025 — Pakistan’s cricket landscape is abuzz with controversy after former star Basit Ali alleged that Salman Ali Agha’s surprise appointment as T20I captain is a tactical move by selectors to eventually crown Shadab Khan as the permanent leader.
Basit Ali’s Controversial Claim: Shadab Khan as Future Skipper
Ali claimed in a bold statement that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is grooming Shadab Khan, the team’s vice-captain, to take over the T20I reins. He argued that the New Zealand tour—starting March 16—will serve as a litmus test for Agha’s leadership, with Shadab waiting in the wings:
“The selectors opted for Salman Ali Agha because they want Shadab Khan to become captain. If Pakistan struggles in New Zealand, Shadab will be pushed forward. Let him play; he’s a quality player who will seize the opportunity if he performs well.”

Salman Ali Agha’s Tough Test in New Zealand
Agha’s appointment marks the fourth T20I captain since January 2024, following Shaheen Afridi, Babar Azam, and Mohammad Rizwan. However, Ali questioned his suitability for the role, citing Agha’s limited T20I experience and below-par strike rate of 79.36 in the format.
“Salman Ali Agha excels in Tests and ODIs but isn’t a natural T20 player. The selectors ignored this flaw,” Ali remarked.
With senior stars like Babar Azam and Rizwan dropped from the T20I squad, Agha must steer an inexperienced team against a formidable New Zealand side.
PCB’s Selection Process Under Fire
Ali criticized the PCB for favoritism and inconsistency, terming the squad selection for the New Zealand tour a “complete mess.”
“Players were picked based on personal preferences, not merit. This approach won’t build a strong team—they’re just trying to mislead the public,” he said.
The T20I squad includes uncapped talents like Hasan Nawaz and Abdul Samad, alongside veterans like Shadab Khan and Shaheen Afridi.
What Lies Ahead for Pakistan?
The five-match T20I series begins on March 16 at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. If Agha’s team falters, Shadab Khan’s path to captaincy could accelerate, per Ali’s claims. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s ODI squad, led by Mohammad Rizwan, prepares for three matches starting March 29.
